Monsters of Folk
Monsters of Folk
[Rough Trade]

Super groups have always been cause for excitement, and this one is no exception. Monsters of Folk (members of Bright Eyes, and My Morning Jacket) debut self-titled album is a mix of Americana and folk rock. Dabbling in Dylan-esque outlaw imagery and alluding to the music of Paul Simon and Wilco, Monsters of Folk manage to convey some real heart. While the album contains beautiful harmonies and haunting melodies, a few of the numbers feel lacking and uninspired. Instead of leaving the listener wanting more, one must instead wade through filler – 15 tracks may have been too many. The band is, however, successful in creating an album that not only flows from track to track, but one in which the listener can imagine each song created by a single entity, not four distinct songwriters.
